The Poulet or Paulet family, Sir Amias Poulet, and Sampford Peverell

Picture
The Poulet family, also spelt variously as Paulet(t), and Paulet(t), had a large interest in, and largely owned, the manor of Sampford Peverell for three centuries.  The family was based in Somerset but also had a manor house in Sampford Peverell.  They were rich, and moved in the highest social circles.
This history of the Poulet family and their links to Sampford Peverell has kindly been written for us by David Yaw, a family historian with links to the village:

The Poulet Family and Sampford Peverell

The most famous member of the family was Sir Amias Paulet who worked as a diplomat and MP, and reported to Sir Francis Walsingham and to Queen Elizabeth 1.  His later duties included being the last jailer of Mary Queen of Scots.  There is more about him in the article above, and also in this article from the History of Parliament

This portrait of him from Wikipedia (and in the public domain) is attributed to Nicholas Hilliard and is dated from 1576-1578
