Names of Sampford Peverell tax payers

The Devon Lay Subsidy Rolls 1524-1527 and 1545-1547

The Subsidy rolls of 1524 - 27 are, with a few exceptions, the first taxation lists giving the names of the inhabitants since the subsidy of 1332.  The Sampford Peverell residents listed in the rolls from 1524-27 and 1545-47 can be found here

An Excel spreadsheet of this data can be found here: The 1524-7 and 1545-7 Devon Subsidy Rolls

The 1674 Hearth Tax

This was a property tax based on the number of hearths, or fireplaces, in a property.  Poorer people would have had just one hearth, and the more hearths were listed the bigger the property was likely to have been.  There is a lot of information about the hearth tax on Wikipedia here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearth_tax

The names and numbers of hearths for Sampford Peverell, with a list of 'paupers', is in this PDF list

The book page showing it can be seen on the password-protected Taxation Originals page by society members here

1844 Tithes

The Tithe Assessments for Sampford Peverell Parish were carried out from 1843 to 1845.

Devon County Council has a web page where you can a detailed map of Sampford Peverell with the properties numbered, and the list of who paid tithes on which property - the Tithe apportionment.  It shows both the original documents and a PDF transcription.  The map is very clear - you can zoom in and out of it.  This is a link to the DCC web page

For ease of looking up people and properties we have done our own transcriptions sorted in three ways:

Tithe apportionment - as published
Tithe apportionment - sorted by property number
Tithe apportionment - sorted by occupier name

You can also download this data as an excel spreadsheet here

Glebe Terriers

A Glebe Terrier was a document describing land and property in the parish owned by the Church of England.  Three seventeenth century glebe terriers for Sampford Peverell survive.  The document here includes a fuller explanation of the documents, and transcriptions of all three.

Land Tax Returns

The land tax was introduced in 1692, and was a tax paid by the owners of property, or in some cases by those leasing property.  There is much more about it on this National Archives web page: https://nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/the-land-tax-1692-1963.pdf

The records for most years for Sampford Peverell are held in the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter, but we have transcribed many of them.  They give the names of landowners, and/or leaseholders, the name of the property, and its value.

Colin Passey has kindly, and patiently, transcribed the Land Tax Returns from 1780 to 1834 for us.  They have not yet been checked, but the Excel spreadsheets can be downloaded here (note, they will download onto your computer, not open on a web page):
